66% Progress on Electoral Manifesto Promises in 3 Years

From tax cuts and family perks to green spaces and educational upgrades...the Government is working towards a more sustainable and inclusive place to live in.

In the wake of Malta’s 2022 general election, the government embarked on an ambitious journey to deliver on a broad spectrum of electoral promises. As the third year of the mandate draws to a close, the fruits of this labour are becoming apparent in tangible improvements across various sectors, from the economy to social welfare, infrastructure, and environmental initiatives.

Economic and Social Transformation

A central tenet of the electoral manifesto was to address the financial well-being of Maltese citizens, and the results speak volumes. In the last three years, the government has successfully implemented around 60% of the measures proposed in its electoral programme, with over 66% of the measures either completed or at advanced stages. This progress highlights a commitment to fulfilling promises made to the electorate.

One of the standout achievements has been the series of tax reductions, which have eased the financial burden on families across the nation. With a €140 million reduction in tax revenue, Malta’s citizens have seen more money in their pockets, with 250,000 individuals receiving refunds. Additionally, an increase in the children’s allowance by €250 per child has provided direct financial support to families, while inflation relief measures have benefitted over 100,000 households. These actions, combined with an increase in the minimum wage and a focus on securing equal pay for equal work, have played a pivotal role in improving the financial stability of Malta’s workforce.

Family and Youth Empowerment

Malta’s government has also demonstrated a keen focus on supporting families and youth through a range of progressive policies. The expansion of support for families is one of the clearest examples of this approach. The introduction of VAT exemptions on sanitary products, the provision of a €1,500 birth bonus for third children, and the enhancement of sensory rooms for children with autism are just a few of the policies aimed at easing the challenges faced by families in Malta.

In the sphere of youth empowerment, the government has invested €10 million into the renewal of the Youth Guarantee scheme, which supports young people in securing employment and training opportunities. In a move to make homeownership more accessible, the government also introduced an additional €1,000 payment for first-time homebuyers, reinforcing its commitment to youth and family welfare.

Elderly Care: Ensuring a Dignified Life

A particularly notable achievement has been the focus on improving the lives of the elderly, with special emphasis on those aged 75 and above. The government has ensured free access to medication for this demographic, alongside a €8 weekly increase in pensions, amounting to an extra €416 per year. Furthermore, the expansion of the CommCare service, which provides vital support to elderly citizens, has been instrumental in improving the quality of life for thousands. With over 1.3 million interventions recorded in the past year, the service continues to provide crucial assistance to those who need it most.

Educational Excellence and Environmental Care

Education has remained at the forefront of the government’s agenda, with a series of initiatives aimed at improving both the infrastructure and support systems within the sector. Notably, agreements with educators have resulted in better working conditions, and stipends for students following 46 specific courses at the University of Malta and MCAST have been increased. Furthermore, new educational centres, such as those in Rabat, Gozo, and Msida, have been inaugurated, further expanding opportunities for the nation’s youth.

Environmental responsibility has been a key focus, with the government delivering on its pledge to improve public spaces. “Project Green” has seen the completion of 16 open space projects, with further initiatives in the pipeline aimed at rehabilitating valleys and establishing community gardens across the islands. These efforts, in addition to promoting biodiversity, are designed to enhance the quality of life for Maltese families by providing more green spaces for recreation and leisure.

Infrastructure and Energy: Building a Sustainable Future

Infrastructure development has been a major focus of the government’s agenda, with significant investments being made in energy and transport. A notable achievement in the energy sector has been the allocation of €930 million in subsidies to keep energy prices manageable for households. Additionally, a new interconnector with Sicily has been approved, securing a more reliable and sustainable energy supply for Malta.

On the transportation front, the government has rolled out various initiatives designed to ease traffic congestion. These include investments in sustainable mobility, as well as schemes encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles, reinforcing the government’s commitment to reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.

Legal and Social Reforms: A Focus on Justice and Inclusion

The past three years have also seen substantial reforms in Malta’s legal and social sectors. The government has introduced tougher penalties for individuals who assault police officers, signalling a commitment to protecting those who serve the public. In addition, significant progress has been made in the reform of the Family Court, with the “Second Chance” initiative drawing closer to approval. This reform, aimed at providing individuals with opportunities to reintegrate into society, is just one of many measures aimed at creating a more inclusive and just society.

Further, the government has outlined a comprehensive 10-year national strategy to combat poverty and promote social inclusion, ensuring that the most vulnerable in society are not left behind.

Cultural and Recreational Advancements

The government’s dedication to enriching Malta’s cultural landscape is evident in its investments in public spaces and the arts. The inauguration of the International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) and the purchase of new band club premises are steps towards promoting the arts and fostering community engagement. Moreover, Malta’s National Park at Ta’ Qali has become a hub for live events and concerts, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering a vibrant cultural scene.

With a clear focus on social justice, inclusivity, and sustainable development, the Maltese government has laid the groundwork for a future that prioritises the well-being of its citizens, ensuring that the promises of 2022 continue to transform into lasting, tangible outcomes.
