Summer 2025: A Season of Progress

Government, through the Foundation for Tomorrow’s Schools (FTS) is spearheading a game-changing transformation in educational infrastructure, backed by a substantial €88 million investment from national and European funds.

The summer of 2025 marked a pivotal period for FTS, driven by a dual focus: upgrading play and sports facilities across schools and launching transformative capital projects, including the construction of new schools.

Revamping School Sports Grounds

FTS continued its commitment to revitalising school sports grounds, replacing outdated rubber surfaces with modern synthetic turf. The overall aesthetic of these spaces was enhanced, providing students with top-tier facilities for play and sports. This effort alone accounted for an investment of €1.4 million.

Major Capital Projects: Shaping the Future

Also, the hot summer months saw FTS embark on its most ambitious capital projects to date. Central to this effort is the construction of two new primary schools in Naxxar and Mellieħa, located in the north of Malta. Rather than expanding into the Outside Development Zones, FTS opted to rebuild these schools on their existing footprints, preserving the architectural charm of post-war modernist buildings. These facades will be carefully integrated into entirely new structures. Together, these projects represent a €42 million investment, with the Naxxar Primary School project co-funded by the European Union through the ERDF funds (ERDF.03.280 Enhancing educational facilities in Naxxar through the construction and setting up of a new primary school).

A Breakthrough for Inclusive Education

At the San Miguel Primary Education Resource Centre in Pembroke, FTS broke ground on an innovative sensory hydrotherapy aquatic complex, aimed at supporting primary school children with individual educational needs. This cutting-edge facility, with an investment of €5.7 million, will provide an invaluable resource for children with disability and individual educational needs.

Advancing Sports Infrastructure

In August 2025, FTS wrapped up the construction phase of the new football ground at the Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School in Naxxar. The complex includes a full-sized football pitch, spectator stands, and a two-level underground carpark with capacity for 500 vehicles. With construction complete, the project is now moving into its final stages, including the mechanical and electrical works. A pedestrian-friendly campus design is also part of the €27 million project, which promises to revolutionise the school’s sports facilities. These facilities will be open to the community outside school hours.

Flexible Spaces for Outdoor Learning

At Ħad-Dingli Secondary School, FTS installed a permanent, motorised retractable canopy, allowing the school to host outdoor activities regardless of weather conditions. The project, valued at €1.6 million, is set for completion in the last quarter of 2025.

Refurbishing Schools in Gozo

In Gozo, FTS kicked off extensive refurbishment works at several primary schools, starting with a full overhaul of Ta’ Kerċem Primary School. The project is progressing rapidly, with completion slated for the first quarter of 2026. The second phase will focus on modernising Żebbuġ Primary School, followed by the refurbishment of Għarb Primary School. These three projects represent a €10.6 million investment in Gozo’s educational infrastructure.

A Total Investment of Over €88 Million

These transformative projects are just the beginning. FTS is on track to invest more than €88 million in educational infrastructure, funded by both national and European sources. As these projects move toward completion, Malta remains committed to shaping the future of its educational landscape by continuing to expand and enhance its portfolio.
