In today’s world, where economic growth often takes centre stage, it’s refreshing to see that communities and their residents value much more than just a booming economy. While a vibrant economy is certainly essential, research suggests that residents and businesses also value a myriad of other qualities.

Research suggests that businesses and individuals alike are increasingly drawn to communities that offer a sense of belonging, social connection, and a vibrant quality of life. Beyond the financial aspects, communities are seeking to foster a strong social foundation. This includes welcoming diversity, creating aesthetically pleasing spaces, and ensuring ample open areas. These intangible qualities often play a more significant role in attracting residents and businesses than purely economic factors.

While individual preferences may vary, studies have consistently highlighted several key elements that contribute to a thriving community:

• Membership: A sense of belonging and being invested in the community.
• Influence: The ability to participate in decision-making processes and have one’s voice heard.
• Integration and fulfillment of needs: The availability of opportunities for personal and social growth, as well as essential amenities and services.
• Shared emotional connection: A sense of community and shared history, along with positive interactions among residents.

Unfortunately, many communities still prioritise economic factors over these essential elements. This narrow-minded approach can lead to a decline in quality of life and a loss of community vitality.

Local councils play a crucial role in shaping their communities. By understanding the importance of these social and cultural factors, they can take steps to create more vibrant and sustainable environments. This includes fostering a sense of belonging, encouraging community participation, and ensuring that the needs of all residents are met.

It’s time for communities to recognise that a thriving economy is just one piece of the puzzle. By investing in social connection, community engagement, and a high quality of life, we can create places where people truly want to live, work, and play.
