“A pro-European, pro-rule of law majority in the EP”

S&D Group Vice President promises “five more democratic years for Europe”.

Projections indicate that the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Group in the European Parliament, with which the Maltese Labour Party is affiliated, has been confirmed as by far the second largest, following the European People’s Party (EPP) Group. In the coming weeks, the S&D will be using this strength in numbers to ensure that a pro-European and pro-rule of law majority that excludes the far right is formed to ensure “five more democratic years for Europe”, Group Vice President, Pedro Marques, told the Press.

Asked what conditions the European socialist family will be imposing in exchange for supporting a second mandate for the EPP’s lead candidate for the European Commission presidency, incumbent Ursula von der Leyen, Marques replied that the socialists respect the Spitzenkandidaten system – the process linking the Commission President’s position to the outcome of European Parliament elections. What matters most, he said, are the policies that the new Commission will be pursuing. He re-iterated, however, that the S&D is against collaboration with the hard-right European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group or Identity and Democracy (ID) Group.

The S&D Vice President thanked the millions of European citizens who went to the polls in the biggest transnational election around the world, in spite of the “threats to democratic forces” in several member states. He promised that, in this new legislature, the S&D will be working to further its basic principles including workers’ rights, the European Green Deal, investment in the economy and in affordable housing, and the continued support to Ukraine.
