A unifying figure

Myriam Spiteri Debono’s appointment will hopefully signal a new era in Malta, something we truly need in the difficult times the world is facing.

In these times of international political turmoil, having a unifying figure who has been given the stamp of approval from both Government and Opposition is a profoundly positive sign. Notary Myriam Spiteri Debono is to be Malta’s next President following her unanimous approval in Parliament. This will hopefully signal a new era in Malta, something we truly need in the difficult times the world is facing.

The third female President of Malta, the third Gozitan, and the first female Gozitan President of the Republic, Spiteri Debono is also the only woman to serve as speaker of the House of Representatives, between 1996 and 1998.

Someone wrote that she lacks the charisma of other Presidents. However, this is an entirely subjective statement because a person who had managed to garner the support of both major political parties who disagree on so much definitely fits this bill. Myriam Spiteri Debono is a trailblazer, a fearless pioneer who contested elections when very few women did so, a woman who pursued a professional career when it was frowned upon. She is someone who is not scared to call a spade a spade and does so with aplomb, but in a spirit of sincerity and empathy. Those who have been touched by her kindness have not forgotten her: her words always frank and her intent always being to put those in need first.

In our polarised nation, where so much is viewed through a partisan political lens, we sorely need this new figurehead. We need a President we can all look upon with faith, someone with a strong will and good heart who can be a beacon in what is looking to be a challenging future.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what Myriam Spiteri Debono will bring with her, along with what she has already delivered: accord.
