Accessing Services Safely and Efficiently with the eID Account

Both Maltese Identity Card holders and foreigners holding a valid Residence Card or Document are eligible to apply for an eID account. To date, there are over 300,000 active eID accounts, with statistics showing steady year-on-year growth in both activations and transactions.

To apply for an eID account, an individual must have a valid Identity Card or Residence Permit.
New eID account applications from Maltese Citizens can be submitted at the Identity Card Office in Blata l-Bajda. Applications from residence permit holders can be submitted at the Expatriates Unit. Once the application is processed, the applicant will receive activation instructions via personal email. During activation, the user must create a personal password to access their eID account securely.
To further enhance national security and ensure that online government services remain protected, all eID account users are now required to enable two-factor authentication (2FA). This extra layer of protection ensures that only legitimate account holders can gain access to their accounts.
With two-factor authentication, users choose to receive a verification code by SMS, email or Mobile App. Entering this code confirms their identity and prevents unauthorised access or misuse.
It is essential that eID credentials are never shared with anyone. Protecting personal login details ensures continued safe, efficient, and trustworthy access to Malta’s growing range of digital public services.
