Manchester United winger Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a late winner as Ivory Coast began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Group E.

Diallo, who was surprisingly left out of Emerse Fae’s starting line-up, replaced Bazoumana Toure in the 56th minute and made the decisive contribution in the final minute of normal time. He finished calmly past goalkeeper Hernan Galindez after a strong run and cross from Wilfried Singo on the right.

Ecuador started the match well and came close to taking the lead during the opening half-hour. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar as Ecuador controlled much of the early play.

However, Ivory Coast gradually grew into the game and created more opportunities as the match progressed. Yan Diomande was a constant threat, while Elye Wahi also hit the crossbar in the second half.

The introductions of Diallo and Ange-Yoan Bonny improved Ivory Coast’s attacking play, and their pressure was eventually rewarded with the winning goal.

The result ends Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run and gives the 2023 African champions an important three points at the start of the tournament.

Diallo’s omission from the starting line-up had raised some questions before kick-off, particularly after his recent performances for the national team. His impact from the bench is likely to strengthen his case for a starting place when Ivory Coast face Germany in their next Group E match.

While Ivory Coast secured the win, the defensive issues exposed by Ecuador’s early chances may be a concern ahead of a tougher test against a Germany side that scored seven goals in their opening match.
