An excellent chance to get off your couch

The village of Għargħur is stepping up with an event dedicated to encouraging people of all ages to embrace fitness and have fun while doing so.

Let’s face it: the demands of modern life are leading us to sedentary habits. Most of us sit down all day, then head home to, well, sit on the couch even more.

The importance of promoting active lifestyles has never been more crucial. Engaging in regular physical activity is known to boost mental and physical health, strengthen community bonds, and improve overall wellbeing. Recognising this, the village of Għargħur is stepping up to inspire its residents and visitors with the much-anticipated first edition of the Għargħur European Week of Sports 2024, an event dedicated to encouraging people of all ages to embrace fitness and have fun while doing so.

Taking place from today until the 30th September, this eight-day celebration will offer a packed schedule of sports and fitness activities, promoting a message of health, teamwork, and togetherness. Behind the scenes, this event is the product of tireless efforts by individuals and organisations who are passionate about making a positive impact on their community. The initiative is spearheaded by the Ħal Għargħur Local Council, with support from SportMalta, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), and the Malta Employees’ Sports Association (MESA), among others. These organisations share a commitment to ensuring that fitness is accessible and enjoyable for all, offering a wide range of activities to cater to every fitness level.

At the heart of this initiative is the drive to not only encourage physical activity but also to bring people together, create memories, and highlight the importance of community spirit. Councillor Mariah Meli, who is leading the organisation of the event, reflects this vision in her role within the Local Council, where she focuses on health, sports, and vulnerable people. She believes strongly in the power of local events like this to strengthen the fabric of society, while also supporting a worthy cause.

From the very first day, the week will host a wide range of exciting events designed to get people of all ages and abilities involved. The action starts on Monday, 23rd September, with an All-Stars Tournament led by Għargħur FC, which will see senior citizens competing in a friendly football match at the Maria Regina Primary School. This inclusive event sets the tone for the week, with a focus on participation, fun, and community.

Later in the week, Saturday, 28th September, will see the Morning Dash Clash 5km Fun Run, organised in collaboration with MESA. Runners from across the island will gather to compete in two categories, racing for trophy awards. The event is open to participants of all skill levels, offering a great way for both seasoned athletes and casual joggers to enjoy some healthy competition in a picturesque setting.

For those looking to get inspired by some of Malta’s top sports figures, the event will feature appearances from prominent athletes including Martin Fenech, Malta’s first boxer to compete overseas, and Leanne Bartolo, former WFF European Bikini champion and a well-known fitness trainer. Bartolo will be leading fitness sessions that are sure to challenge and energise attendees, providing a unique opportunity to train alongside one of the island’s best.

Families will also have their time to enjoy together, with a Family Sports Day on Sunday, 29th September at Parish Square. This day is all about bringing families closer through shared activities, encouraging parents and children to bond over a range of sporting challenges designed to be both fun and rewarding.

Finally, the week will close on a high note with a Street Football Frenzy hosted by Għargħur FC on Monday, 30th September. Aimed at children aged 10 to 14, this event promises to bring the excitement of street football to Parish Square, offering a thrilling finale to the week’s celebrations.

With the community coming together for such a worthy cause, and with proceeds going to Puttinu Cares, this event isn’t just about sports, it’s about fostering connections, supporting one another, and showing that fitness is for everyone. Speaking to The Journal, Councillor Mariah Meli shares this sentiment, stating, “Our goal is to create an event that celebrates health, wellness, and above all, community. We hope that everyone who participates leaves feeling inspired and uplifted, knowing that they have contributed to something greater than themselves.”
