Trump survives assassination attempt

This morning's top world news, in a nutshell - Sunday, 14th July 2024.

A shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.

A shooter is dead and an attendee was killed. Two attendees are critically injured. Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off the stage and is being checked out at a local medical facility.

Videos show suspect lying motionless on nearby rooftop after shooting

Two videos posted on social media that were verified by The New York Times appeared to show the person suspected of shooting at Trump lying motionless on the roof of a small building roughly 400 feet north of the stage Trump was speaking from.

The location of the body matches the likely firing position. An audio analysis of the gunfire determined it came from approximately the same distance as the body’s location, and the visible injury to the right ear of Trump, who was facing northwest, was also consistent with gunfire from that direction.

A spokesman for the Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, said the suspected gunman “fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside the rally venue.” The suspect had been killed, the Secret Service said.

According to The associated Press:

What happened: Trump was showing off a chart of border crossing numbers when a popping sound was heard, and the former president put his right hand up to his right ear. It’s still not clear yet whether Trump was struck by gunfire or was injured as he was pulled to the ground by agents.

What we know about the shooter: Two officials spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation. They said the shooter was not an attendee at the rally and was killed by US Secret Service agents.

Biden’s response: In a televised address, US president Joe Biden said “everybody must condemn” the attack, he is relieved that Trump is reportedly “doing well”. His campaign said it’s pausing all messaging to supporters and is working to pull down all of its television ads as quickly as possible.

Biden spoke to Trump and to the governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, and the mayor of Butler, Bob Dandoy, where the shooting occurred.

Meanwhile, Biden immediately returned to the White House after what happened. “Violence like this has no place in our nation,” he said.

Trump thanks US Secret Service

Trump, in his social media post, thanked the US Secret Service and law endorsement for their “rapid response” and also extended his condolences “to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead,” he said.

Trump plans to attend the Republican convention

Donald Trump still intends to participate in the Republican convention next week, during which he will have to be officially designated as the Republicans’ presidential candidate, according to his campaign and the party announcement. “President Trump is well” and “he looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee” in Wisconsin, we read in a statement. The convention will be held from tomorrow to July 18.

World leaders react

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said in a statement: “We are shocked by the scenes at President Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. We condemn all forms of political violence in the strongest terms and we send our best wishes to President Trump and his family at this time.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on X he was “sickened” by the shooting. “It cannot be overstated – political violence is never acceptable. My thoughts are with former President Trump, those at the event, and all Americans.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “concerning and confronting”. “There is no place for violence in the democratic process,” Albanese wrote in a post on X. “I am relieved to hear reports that former President Trump is now safe.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni social media “expressed her solidarity and best wishes for a speedy recovery go to him, with the hope that the next few months of the electoral campaign will see dialogue and responsibility prevail over hatred and violence”.

‘First assasination attempt since 1981’

The attack, by a shooter who law enforcement officials say was then killed by the Secret Service, was the first attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

Trump ‘is in great spirits’

Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., says he just spoke to his father on the phone and that “he is in great spirits”. “He will never stop fighting to save America, no matter what the radical left throws at him,” he said of his father in a statement.

At least 90 Palestinians killed as Israel targets Hamas military chief

At least 90 Palestinians have been reported killed in an Israeli strike on a displacement camp in southern Gaza which Israel said targeted Hamas’ military chief, who was an alleged mastermind of the October 7 attacks.

Footage from Al-Mawasi, which has been designated as a safe zone for Palestinians fleeing the fighting elsewhere, shows bodies in the street and destroyed tents. “I cannot describe to you the magnitude of the tragedy,” one resident told CNN.

Mohammed Deif – the leader of Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing – was the figure targeted, alongside the head of the Khan Younis brigade, Rafe Salama, an Israeli security official told CNN.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a press conference in Tel Aviv Saturday that he was not certain whether Deif and his deputy had been killed, but said he had given his blessing for the head of Shin Bet – Israel’s security agency – to carry out the operation after being assured there were no hostages in the area.

The strike left scenes of devastation in the area, where the Gaza Health Ministry reported at least 90 people killed and 300 people injured. It said women and children accounted for half of those killed and dozens of those injured. Locals and rescue teams were seen trying to unearth several people trapped.

Man arrested in UK over human remains found in dumped suitcases

British police said Saturday they had arrested a man in connection with the deaths of two men whose remains were found in two suitcases in southwest England.

The Metropolitan Police said armed officers detained a 34-year-old suspect at a train station in the city of Bristol early Saturday.

Police also said more human remains were found at an address in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, the previous day, believed to be connected to those found in the suitcases dumped near the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol on Wednesday.

Forensic officers wearing blue suits and masks could be seen working behind the cordon at the crime scene in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, on Saturday morning.

The suspect “will be taken to London for questioning later today,” police said in a statement. “Extensive enquiries are ongoing, however at this stage police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.”

Metropolitan Police previously named Colombian national Yostin Andres Mosquera as someone they wished to locate and speak to.

Police officers were called to the iconic bridge at around midnight Wednesday, 10 minutes after receiving reports of a man behaving strangely. But the man, who had traveled there by taxi, was already gone. Police said the taxi had been seized and its driver was helping officers with the investigation.

The victims have not yet been formally identified but both are believed to be adults. One autopsy was deemed “inconclusive,” while a second post-mortem examination remains ongoing.

A 36-year-old man who was arrested in Greenwich in southeast London on Friday in connection with the investigation has since been released without charge.

Murderer of 2 Native Alaskan women gets 226 years

Brian Steven Smith has been sentenced to 226 years in prison for the deaths of two Native Alaskan women, Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk.

Smith was found guilty in February on 14 criminal counts, including first and second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and sexual assault in the deaths of both women. He declined to speak at Friday’s hearing and did not speak at all throughout the trial. The 226-year sentence matches the length recommended by prosecutors from the Anchorage District Attorney’s office.

De la Fuente calls on Spain players to make history in Euros final

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente called on a “brilliant” generation of players to make history for their country in the Euro 2024 final against England this evening.

La Roja are aiming to win a record fourth European Championship 12 years after they last lifted the trophy.

With Rodri Hernandez pulling the strings in midfield and explosive young wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams in attack, Spain have been the tournament’s great entertainers on the road to Berlin.

“It’s a brilliant generation, many of them have come through successful youth levels and that usually bodes well for success,” De la Fuente told reporters Saturday. “We want to start to make history – and we have made history already in the run to (the final)… I trust in a great future, there’s both present and future.”

Spain won the 2008 and 2012 Euros and the 2010 World Cup with many star players from Barcelona and Real Madrid, including Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Sergio Ramos and David Villa.

The current side has fewer stars but consider that one of their strong points, with the squad on an even footing and “unity” has been a key word among Spain players at the tournament.

Despite Spain shining en route to the final while England have scraped through, De la Fuente said the clash at the Olympiastadion will be “extremely balanced”.

“Whichever team manages to impose their strengths, whoever makes less errors (will win),” said the coach. “But you can win a one-off game, even playing far worse (than your opponent). We need to have maximum concentration, not make any mistakes and take advantage of the chances we have.”

The coach thanked injured duo Pedri and Ayoze Perez, who will not be available to face England, and said Barcelona midfielder Gavi will travel to join the team for the final. The 19-year-old missed most of the season with a knee injury but was an important player for Spain before sustaining it in November.

De la Fuente said it was no challenge to keep Barcelona’s Yamal, who turned 17 on Saturday, and Athletic Bilbao’s Williams, 22, calm ahead of the biggest game of their careers.

“It’s not at all hard, they have such joy, and incredible maturity for such young players, they understand the sport very well and they are well accompanied by more experienced players,” explained the coach.

“We’re a team, it’s not about hailing individuals, and this makes us stronger.”

At the other end of the age spectrum is 38-year-old Sevilla defender Jesus Navas, who started the semi-final win over France in direct confrontation with Kylian Mbappe. Navas won the 2010 World Cup, 2012 Euros and the 2023 Nations League with Spain and said he would love to lift another trophy with his country.

“To still be enjoying myself with my national team at 38 is incredible,” said the right-back. “In (Spain’s golden years) we were such a close-knit group, and you could feel it. Now it’s the same, there’s an incredible group. I’m delighted by everything that’s happening to us.

“We know the excitement and hope that we all have and I hope we can win it.”

Harry Kane promises England will bring ‘extra hunger and fire’

England captain Harry Kane said in a press conference the team has an “extra hunger” to make sure the Euro 2024 final goes their way.

He has said England will play with “extra hunger and fire in the belly” with less than 24 hours to go until their Euros final face-off against Spain.

The England captain spoke of their hopes of winning the tournament, which would mark the first time a major men’s trophy has been lifted in 58 years.

Kane said the side were keen to avenge their loss to Italy on penalties in the most recent Euros final in 2021. “It was a tough finish in the last Euros so there’s extra hunger and fire in the belly to make sure this one goes our way,” he said. “But we also know it’s going to be an extremely tough night.”

Kane, who is England and Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer, said he would swap all of his personal accolades to lift the Euro 2024 trophy with his England teammates.

He said: “I’m extremely proud to be English. So yeah, no question, I’d swap everything in my career to have a spec ial night by winning tomorrow.”

Prince William has urged England to “go out there and show the world what you’re made of” when they face Spain in the Euro 2024 final tonight. In a social media post, he said: “We are so proud of you all England, just one last push to finish the job! Go out there and show the world what you’re made of. We believe. W.”
