Belgium and Egypt shared the points in a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match, with Romelu Lukaku making an immediate impact from the bench to help Belgium avoid defeat.

Egypt took the lead in the 19th minute through Emam Ashour, who produced an excellent long-range finish after being set up by Mohamed Salah. The goal gave Egypt a historic advantage, marking the first time they had led at half-time in a World Cup match.

Salah’s contribution was particularly notable as he celebrated his 34th birthday, becoming the first African player since records began in 1966 to register a World Cup goal involvement on his birthday.

Belgium struggled to break down a disciplined Egyptian side for much of the match, despite efforts from captain Kevin De Bruyne. The midfielder came close to equalising when his second-half free-kick struck the post.

The turning point arrived in the 66th minute when Belgium introduced Lukaku. Just 22 seconds after entering the field, the striker’s presence in the box led to Mohamed Hany turning Thomas Meunier’s cross into his own net.

Both sides had chances to claim victory, Shobier produced an excellent save to deny Brandon Mechele’s header, while Lukaku missed a late opportunity.

The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening fixture. Belgium will face Iran in their next Group G match, while Egypt take on New Zealand.
