Bringing Identity Services Closer to the Community

The Maltese Identity Card is one of the most important documents a person will hold. It is an essential and secure credential that verifies one’s identity.
As the renewal exercise progressed, the Identity Cards Unit processed thousands of applications, maintaining a smooth and efficient process throughout. To meet growing demand, the department has extended its opening hours, set up additional service stations to accommodate more clients, continued investing in Homebound services, introduced an online appointment system, submission of eForms, and invested in advanced technology to ensure the highest standards in both document security and service quality.
To further improve accessibility, Identità has partnered with the Association of Local Councils to bring Identity Card card renewal services into local communities — making this essential service more convenient and closer to the people.
This service was initially launched in collaboration with the Fgura, Żejtun, Żabbar, and Naxxar Local Councils. By the end of this year, it will also be available at the Swieqi, Marsaxlokk, Rabat, St Paul’s Bay, and Mosta Local Councils, with additional locations to be announced next year. This initiative means less travel, shorter waiting times, and a smoother experience for citizens.
These improvements were only made possible thanks to sustained investment in digital innovation and the dedication of Identità’s employees, who by now have processed nearly three times as many Identity Cards as in previous years.
It is important to note that the service offered through local councils is for renewals only; applications for changes to personal details or replacements for lost cards must still be submitted at the Identity Cards Unit, at Gattard House, Blata l-Bajda.
