A pioneering medical procedure is now available in Malta, offering patients access to advanced diagnosis and treatment of small-intestine conditions without the need to travel abroad. The introduction of Double Balloon Enteroscopy at Mater Dei Hospital marks a significant step forward in national healthcare.

This is a new service that has been introduced at Mater Dei Hospital following an investment of €1.5 million. The Double Balloon Enteroscopy is an advanced endoscopic technique that allows professionals to examine the small intestine, which is unreachable through traditional endoscopy. This modern technique is mainly used to investigate unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding and can both identify and treat the source of the problem.

This investment, apart from enabling the hospital to avoid the need for complex surgeries, will improve the quality of life of patients in Malta and Gozo by removing the need for treatment abroad. Minister Jo Etienne Abela highlighted that Double Balloon Enteroscopy also plays an important role in the diagnosis and management of small-intestine conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, tumours and complications related to coeliac disease. This and similar investments are made possible thanks to the country’s strong economic performance.
