As announced in the 2026 Budget, pensioners across Malta and Gozo will once again benefit from an increase in their weekly pension. This year’s adjustment will see a €10 rise per week, continuing the government’s commitment to improving the standard of living for the elderly. The widowers’s pension will increase by an additional €3.50 to €13.50 per week.

In total, around 100,000 pensioners including those receiving retirement, invalidity, widow’s, and age pensions will benefit from this increase.

Additional Support for Widows Raising Children

Beyond the pension rise, the government is extending support for widows who are still raising children. Around 1,000 individuals in this category will see their allowance increase by €10 per week. Furthermore, the allowance will now be paid until the children reach the age of 23, up from the previous threshold.

Annual Supplement for Seniors Increased

The annual supplement for individuals aged 65 and over will also see a boost, rising by €100 to reach €250. In a significant change, couples who both fall within this age bracket will now each receive the supplement, rather than just one spouse as before.

Higher Rates for Married Pensioners

Pensioners receiving reduced-rate married pensions because their spouses also receive a pension will benefit from increases ranging between €2 and €14 per week. Approximately 5,000 pensioners will gain from this measure.

Adjustments for Service Pensioners

Those on service pensions will see their computed pension rise by €200, bringing it to €3,866 annually. Moreover, pensioners aged 72 and over will continue to have their service pension disregarded in pension calculations, a measure expected to benefit around 7,000 individuals.

Increases for Non-Pensioners and Elderly Living Allowances

People who are not eligible for a pension will receive a €50 increase in their annual bonus. The new rate will range from €600 for those who paid one year of contributions to €1,050 for those who paid up to nine years.

Additionally, the grant for elderly persons living at home, with relatives, or in private residential homes will increase by €75. The grant will now amount to €425 for those aged 75 to 79, and €525 for those aged 80 and over. Around 45,500 people are expected to benefit from this measure.
