A €5 million investment from European funds is supporting the development of a new museum for St John’s Co-Cathedral, strengthening the cultural value of one of Malta’s most important historic landmarks while improving the visitor experience.

The project will see the expansion and enhancement of the museum, together with the restoration and adaptation of existing structures. Its aim is to create a modern, accessible and sustainable space where Malta’s artistic and historical treasures can be preserved and enjoyed by future generations.

Among the collections to be displayed are Flemish tapestries, sacred vestments, choral books and works by Mattia Preti. These will be housed in an environment designed to meet high international standards, ensuring both conservation and a richer cultural experience for visitors.

The new museum will also include dedicated spaces such as a Tapestry Hall, alongside modern facilities and digital and educational technologies aimed at making the visit more engaging and informative.

Minister for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said the project shows how European funds are being used in a concrete way to protect and strengthen Malta’s cultural heritage.

He noted that the €5 million investment is not only helping conserve priceless treasures, but is also creating a modern and accessible experience for everyone. He described it as an investment in culture, education, quality of life and the sustainable tourism potential of the country.

Cathedral Foundation Chief Executive Officer Tonio Mallia said the project marks an important step in how the unique heritage of the Co-Cathedral is presented and safeguarded.

Through this investment, he said, new modern spaces will be created to preserve the collections according to international standards while offering a more meaningful and educational experience to visitors.

Accessibility is also a central part of the project. Improvements will include assistive technologies and modern facilities so that everyone, including persons with disabilities, can enjoy this national heritage.

The investment reflects the continued strategic use of European funds to support culture, strengthen tourism and contribute to Malta’s sustainable development.
