Throughout the years, Labour governments have built a resilient economy that continues to generate growth, jobs, and confidence. With Malta’s debt levels among the lowest in Europe, the challenge ahead lies in sustaining this momentum while meeting people’s expectations.

Throughout the last three legislatures, successive Labour governments have managed to administer public finances with great success. This efficiency has positively impacted people’s lives, raising expectations for future administrations.

Government policymaking and macro-level strategies influence the micro aspects of various stakeholders, from small and medium enterprise owners to households. The current economic model takes into account the rational expectations, needs, and aspirations of the population at large.

The constant drive for better jobs and inclusive growth remains the glue that sustains the many employment opportunities created over the years. Forecasting what lies ahead in an increasingly globalised market and shifting international agenda is no easy task.

The Labour Party has maintained both political and economic stability while reducing Malta’s debt-to-GDP ratio to 47.4 percent by the end of 2024. This figure stands well below the EU average of 81 percent and the euro area average of 87.4 percent.

The Labour Party continues to be a guarantee for the sound management of Malta’s finances, despite ongoing attempts by the Opposition to undermine economic confidence. Looking ahead, Malta must remain attentive to new EU policies across key sectors to stay at the forefront and remain attractive to international financial flows and foreign direct investment.

When it comes to policymaking, politicians must carefully balance people’s rational expectations, as citizens are ultimately the custodians of the government’s purse. Over the years, Labour administrations have taken the right measures to safeguard the economic welfare of the population, resulting in increased prosperity across all segments of society.
