Investing in young people remains a top priority for the Labour Government. Starting this scholastic year, every student in Years 7, 8, and 9 will receive their own laptop, a major step in Malta’s digital transformation. This initiative goes beyond technology, giving every child equal access to opportunity and the tools to shape their own future.

As of  the beginning of this scholastic year, every student in Years 7, 8, and 9 in Malta will receive their own laptop. This is a big step forward in the country’s digital transformation.  This initiative is part of the One Device Per Child (ODPC) programme, the largest investment in education ever made (€54 million) and funded by both EU and national funds. It signals that the government is committed to preparing every young person for the digital era.

The new rollout builds on the previous distribution of 9,000 two-in-one devices to all Year 4 and Year 5 students in government, church, and independent schools. It ensures that every child has access to modern learning tools. This effort directly closes the digital divide, making sure that all students, regardless of their background, have equal access to the technology that will shape the world of tomorrow.

The advantages go way beyond the classroom. Students learn important digital skills, creativity, and confidence when laptops are used in everyday lessons. These are all important for future jobs in a fast-changing economy. Teachers are also getting ongoing training to make sure that technology is used to make learning more interactive, interesting, and useful.

The project is part of Malta’s Digital Education Strategy 2024–2030, which puts digital literacy and inclusion at the centre of education policy. It also supports the Labour Government in reaching its wider goals of improving lifelong learning, lowering the number of students who drop out of school early, and making the country more competitive by having a workforce that is skilled in technology.

By investing in young people today, the current government is laying the foundation for a fairer and more innovative Malta. It’s not just about distributing laptops; it’s about empowering a generation with the tools they need to succeed and making sure that every child’s future is shaped by opportunity, not circumstance.
