The Maltese Government’s firm stance on irregular migration has received recognition at the European level, with EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner praising Malta’s swift returns policy as a clear signal to migrant smuggling networks.

In a post on X on Monday morning, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, commended the Maltese Government for sending a clear and firm message to migrant smugglers. His remarks followed last week’s successful return of 48 irregular migrants to their country of origin, just 17 days after being rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta.

Commissioner Brunner’s comments are a testament to Malta’s effective approach to addressing irregular migration through the implementation of a balanced and just migration policy. This policy ensures that migrants who are genuinely in need of international protection are granted all the rights and benefits to which they are entitled, while those who have no legal right to remain are returned swiftly to their country of origin.

Prevention and an efficient returns system form the cornerstone of this approach. In recent years, the Government has strengthened resources within key entities, established a dedicated Returns Unit within the Ministry for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, and enhanced cooperation with countries of origin and transit, including Libya.

These measures have delivered tangible results. Irregular arrivals have dropped by 93% compared to 2019, and in 2025, the equivalent of 81% of irregular arrivals were successfully returned. The Government remains committed to this strategy, with the aim of disrupting smuggling networks, reducing incentives for irregular migration, and minimising the risk of loss of life at sea.
