Kylian Mbappe became France’s all-time leading goalscorer as Didier Deschamps’ side opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal in New Jersey.

The match remained goalless at half-time, with Senegal producing the better opportunities. Ismaila Sarr came closest before the break but failed to convert from close range as France struggled to create clear chances despite their attacking line-up.

France improved significantly after the restart and took the lead through Mbappe. Michael Olise delivered a precise pass into the penalty area and the Real Madrid forward finished first time to score his 57th international goal, drawing level with former record holder Olivier Giroud.

The lead was doubled when Bradley Barcola calmly lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper after being played through on goal.

Senegal reduced the deficit late in the game through substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, who finished neatly after finding space inside the area. However, any hopes of a comeback were ended moments later when Mbappe scored his second goal of the evening. Collecting possession outside the box, he struck a powerful effort into the net to register his 58th goal for France and move clear at the top of the country’s scoring charts.

The result gives France an important three points in Group I and places Mbappe alongside Germany’s Gerd Muller on 14 World Cup goals. Only Brazil’s Ronaldo (15) and Germany’s Miroslav Klose (16) have scored more goals in the tournament’s history.
