The Nationalist Party has yet again demonstrated its penchant for fabricating baseless allegations, even in the wake of the conclusion of the 17 Black inquiry. Conducted by Magistrate Charmaine Galea, the inquiry has been submitted to the Attorney General, and as expected from a party committed to due process, the Labour Party has rightly insisted that legal proceedings be allowed to follow their proper course.

However, the PN, in its desperation, chose to twist the narrative and insinuated the involvement of individuals within the Labour Party or Government in the 17 Black case. This claim, as firmly rebutted by the PL, is a blatant falsehood, exposing the PN’s unscrupulous attempts to manipulate public perception.

A Party Gripped by Extremism

A statement signed by Karol Aquilina reveals the deepening extremism within the PN, a factional clique that seems to hold Bernard Grech’s leadership hostage. Aquilina’s inflammatory rhetoric, laced with threats against Prime Minister Robert Abela, exposes the party’s descent into political fanaticism. Such outbursts are not only unbecoming of a party claiming to champion democracy but also betray a disregard for the principles of the rule of law.

The Labour Party has rightly asserted that Prime Minister Abela will not be intimidated by the hollow threats of a desperate politician. Instead, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that the judiciary and institutions operate independently and effectively to deliver justice without interference.

Jason Azzopardi and the PN’s Hypocrisy

Adding to this charade is the PN’s re-embrace of Jason Azzopardi. Once derided within their own ranks, Azzopardi has now become a convenient ally in their tirades against the Labour Government. Aquilina’s attacks on the Attorney General further highlight the PN’s inability to engage in constructive discourse, resorting instead to insults and baseless accusations.

The Labour Party aptly describes the PN’s tactics as a destructive, envy-driven agenda aimed at destabilising the country. Rather than presenting credible policies or encouraging a mature political debate, the PN wallows in threats and insults, exposing its own lack of vision and leadership.

Losing Their Way

In their frantic bid to reclaim power, the PN has abandoned all semblance of responsible governance. Their erratic behavior, peppered with baseless allegations, threats, and divisive rhetoric, reflects a party that has lost its moral compass. Such actions do nothing to strengthen Malta’s democratic fabric but instead undermine public trust in its institutions.

The Maltese people deserve a political opposition that prioritises accountability and progress over personal vendettas and baseless theatrics. The Nationalist Party’s current trajectory is not just a disservice to its supporters but to the nation as a whole. If it continues down this path of extremism and irresponsibility, it risks not only political irrelevance but also lasting damage to Malta’s democratic principles. The time has come for the PN to recalibrate its priorities and recommit to the values it claims to hold.
