Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged to significantly strengthen investment in the environment as part of a broader strategy aimed at improving quality of life and safeguarding Malta’s natural and cultural heritage.

In his New Year’s message, Prime Minister Robert Abela confirmed plans to return major coastal and heritage sites to public ownership, describing the move as a long-term investment in the country’s environmental and social wellbeing. Manoel Island, White Rocks, and Forti Campbell were confirmed as sites that the government intends to reclaim and convert into national parks, creating more open green spaces for families and future generations.

In his end of year message in Manoel Island, Dr Abela said that while the process is complex due to past contractual obligations, the government remains determined to protect land of national and international value from overdevelopment. He described the initiative as a clear statement of intent towards sustainable planning and environmental responsibility.
The Prime Minister linked environmental investment to Malta’s economic resilience, noting that despite international instability caused by wars and economic slowdowns, the country has maintained a strong economy. This stability, he said, has allowed the government to invest not only in social measures, but also in projects that enhance public spaces, preserve heritage, and improve overall quality of life.

Looking to the future, Dr Abela announced the launch of Vision Malta 2050, Malta’s first comprehensive long-term national plan. The strategy sets ambitious targets for human development, family income growth, and life satisfaction, all of which the Prime Minister said depend on responsible land use, environmental protection, and sustainable development .

He also referred to major regeneration projects, including the transformation of the Grand Harbour area and land reclamation initiatives, which are intended to balance economic growth with modern, environmentally conscious planning.
Concluding his message, the Prime Minister stressed that environmental investment is a core pillar of national progress. By expanding green spaces, protecting heritage sites, and embedding sustainability into long-term planning, the government aims to ensure that Malta’s economic success delivers lasting benefits for Maltese and Gozitan families.
