Prime Minister Robert Abela, together with Minister for European Funds and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and Richmond Foundation, unveiled plans for a new Wellbeing Centre to be built on government granted land in Mosta.

The centre will include recreational, educational and therapeutic spaces within a modern facility specifically designed to cater for mental health services.

The project represents a major investment in mental health infrastructure, supported by a €5.3 million allocation from the European Regional Development Fund. The funding was allocated by the government to ensure the project’s implementation.

Speaking during the presentation, PM Abela said the project forms part of the government’s holistic vision to work alongside organisations such as the Richmond Foundation and civil society to provide the best possible support services to people facing difficulties.

He noted that discussions surrounding the importance of integrating mental health services within communities have grown significantly in recent years. PM Abela also praised the Richmond Foundation for its continued efforts to combat the stigma surrounding mental health.

The Prime Minister added that the government is continuing to push forward plans for a new mental health hospital within the Mater Dei Hospital complex.

Abela pointed out that over the past decade, the Richmond Foundation has increased its therapeutic sessions by nearly tenfold. He also referred to the Mental Health First Aid Course, which has so far been completed by more than 11,000 people, including secondary school students.

Despite ongoing geopolitical challenges and energy-related pressures worldwide, PM Abela said social priorities remain central to Malta’s agenda.

Before addressing attendees, the Prime Minister and his wife, Lydia Abela, met with employees and individuals benefiting from the foundation’s services.

For his part, EU Funds Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi said the project demonstrates how European funds are being directed towards initiatives that make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

“With an investment of €5.3 million in European funds, we are investing not only in modern infrastructure but also in more accessible services, a therapeutic environment, and concrete support for those in need,” he said.

Meanwhile, Richmond Foundation CEO Daniela Calleja Bitar said the Wellbeing Centre would mark another important step in strengthening community mental health services.
