On International Disability Day it is important to celebrate the diverse qualities of each and everyone of us. But inclusion cannot be just a catchy slogan. Testament to this is that in Malta are the 5,649 individuals with a disability that have a job, a figure that tripled since 2012.

The rate of persons with disabilities, in Malta, holding employment has tripled, reaching record levels.

On International Disability Day it is important to celebrate the diverse qualities of each and everyone of us. But inclusion cannot be just a catchy slogan. Testament to this is that in Malta are the 5,649 individuals with a disability that have a job, a figure that tripled since 2012.

This is a very special community that requires support and that is also fulfilling very important roles. The success being registered is the result of the various schemes, incentives and training being offered by the Government. 

Beyond International Disability Day, it must be ensured that this community continues to be supported through a strategy that focuses on wellbeing and empowerment.

Malta is already doing a lot and will continue to do so.

This is clearly illustrated by Budget 2026, which includes essential initiatives for disability and inclusion.

The scheme for reimbursement of expenses for specialised therapy is now open to all parents of children with disabilities. With Budget 2026, the grant has been increased from €750 to €1,000 and extended until the age of 23. This is support for parents of children with conditions such as autism who attend therapy services. 

Parents who stop working for some time to raise their children with disabilities or rare diseases will be given National Insurance credits until their children reach the age of 10. 

The Personal Budgets Assistance Scheme is being run more efficiently and effectively. In 2025, 567 people benefited from personal assistance. €3.5 million have already been allocated to persons with disabilities, an increase of 104 people compared to last year. 

The Empowerment Scheme is also being significantly strengthened through a pilot project for more accessible transport services. This service will be extended to people in wheelchairs, including the elderly and persons with intellectual disabilities who cannot use public transport. This is in addition to existing schemes that promote mobility using their private car. 

Persons with disabilities who never had the chance to become homeowners can now fulfill their dream thanks to the New Hope Scheme – an initiative aimed at helping individuals.
