As the Maltese population ages and fewer children are born, policymakers and communities alike are being called to act. In response, iDEAT, the think tank within Partit Laburista, is hosting a public discussion to explore the causes behind this decline and identify practical, community-driven solutions to help secure Malta’s future.

Malta is confronting a demographic challenge that cannot be ignored. The birth rate has fallen to troubling levels, raising urgent questions about the future of our society. Is this decline simply a matter of finances, or are deeper cultural and social factors involved? Will Malta’s population continue to diminish, and what can be done to reverse this trend?

To explore these pressing issues, iDEAT, the think tank within Partit Laburista, is organising an important public discussion. iDEAT’s role is to ask the tough questions, inspire honest debate, and help develop structured policies grounded in evidence and open dialogue.

The debate will feature a number of panellists—including experts, researchers, and community leaders—who will share insights and propose solutions. Beyond family support, the discussion will also examine whether cultural shifts are needed—such as promoting a more family-friendly society, reforming work-life balance policies, and fostering an environment where raising children is seen as a valued and achievable goal. The debate will consider all these factors—economic, social, and cultural—to identify practical actions that can help increase the birth rate.
