The Agency for the Services of Victims of Crime (VSA) in Malta has recognised this often-overlooked struggle and introduced two new support services aimed at making that journey a little bit easier and more accessible.

A Helping Hand for Parents and Carers

When a mother or any parent needs to stand in court, her mind is not solely on her testimony. It is also on the small child left behind, the baby who needs feeding, the toddler who clings to her leg at every goodbye. For many, the simple act of testifying becomes impossible without reliable childcare.

That is why VSA has opened the doors of four childcare centres across Malta and Gozo, including Santa Venera, Mriehel, and Gharb. These centres provide free childcare for victims who are set to testify in court. This gives them the space to focus on their testimony without the constant worry of who is watching their child. It may seem like a small step, but it removes one of the biggest barriers between victims and their right to be heard.

But this service is not just for parents. The VSA has also extended its support to those who care for elderly or vulnerable family members. If you need to testify in court and you are the primary carer for someone who cannot be left alone, the agency arranges for a certified carer to come to your home at no cost. For those few hours, you can speak your truth knowing that your loved one is safe and cared for.

These services are more than just practical solutions; they are a recognition of the real-life challenges victims face. Testifying in court is already difficult without the added weight of family responsibilities. By stepping in to provide care, VSA is sending a clear message that your voice matters and your family matters too.

Minister for Internal Affairs, Security, and Employment, Byron Camilleri, described the initiative as part of a broader effort to support victims, not just legally but practically. Since its inception four years ago, VSA has helped over 4,000 victims. This new offering is another step towards justice that is not only served but genuinely accessible.
