The Labour Party on Sunday commemorated the memory of Karin Grech on the forty-eighth anniversary of her death, describing her legacy as a lasting reminder of the importance of peace and national unity.

Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by members of the Labour Party administration and several Labour MPs, laid flowers at Karin Grech’s memorial in San Ġwann during a short commemorative ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Abela said that the memory of Karin Grech remains relevant today, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts and atrocities taking place in countries close to Malta. He said these events serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the need to safeguard peace.

The Prime Minister referred to the personal tragedy endured by Karin Grech’s family, stating that her parents paid the highest possible price for their beliefs. He noted that Karin Grech lost her life at a young age, while her father, Professor Edwin Grech, continued to serve the community by caring for patients.

Dr Abela also stressed the importance of remembering painful chapters in Malta’s history, arguing that such reflection is necessary to fully appreciate peace and social cohesion. He said that the importance of peace must continue to be emphasised and protected by an active and engaged society.

Concluding his remarks, the Prime Minister said that Malta’s present stability and prosperity are built on the foundations laid by previous generations. He added that remembering events such as the death of Karin Grech is essential to preserving national unity and ensuring that past sacrifices are not forgotten.
