Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici – the lawyer, the politician, the gentleman

Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici gave modern Malta two of its defining characteristics: the principle of neutrality and the constitutional guarantee that the will of the majority reigns supreme.
At a ceremony held in his honour, Prime Minister Robert Abela underlined how these constitutional amendments strengthened democracy and delivered stability, while also highlighting how the late Prime Minister embodied the values of social justice, integrity, and humility.
Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici gave the people of Malta one of the greatest gifts a public servant can give: his time. His availability, his willingness to listen, and his unwavering commitment to being a strong voice for workers were qualities that left a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.
The newly unveiled monument commemorating this pivotal figure in Maltese political history was crafted in Italy and designed by Maltese artist Manuel Farrugia. Featuring a pedestal made of Maltese hardstone and a bronze statue, it portrays Mifsud Bonnici exactly as he was remembered: dedicated to work, close to the people, and always ready to listen. Beyond serving as a tribute to a former Prime Minister, the monument stands as a point of reflection on an entire era of Malta’s political development.
Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was a man of principle who never compromised on what was right and just. Not attracted to the world’s material worth, numerous people still recount countless stories of how they were helped in silence by a humble man who expected nothing in return, up until his very last days.
His legacy remains deeply relevant today. His values, humility, and gentleness continue to serve as guiding principles for those in public life: to serve others, to create wealth, and to ensure that it is fairly distributed across society. His memory endures as a powerful reminder that degrading behaviour is best answered with acts of kindness for the benefit of all.
