A society that truly values its people is one that supports them at every stage of life, including in retirement. Pensioners and the elderly deserve dignity, stability, and the certainty that their contributions over the years are recognised.

This is what the Labour Party is delivering: a clear and sustained commitment to stronger pensions and better support in later life.

At the core of these proposals is a strong guarantee: over the next five years, pensions will increase by €50 per week, including cost-of-living adjustments – a steady rise of €10 each year that provides both certainty and improved financial security.

Flexibility within the system will also improve. Couples will be able to transfer up to five years of excess paid contributions between them, ensuring that those who fall short of the required number of contributions can still qualify for the minimum pension.

Support for widows and widowers is being significantly strengthened. By 2027, the reform of the widow’s pension will be completed, meaning that widows and widowers will receive the full pension of their deceased spouse. Those who lost their own pension upon becoming widowed will also benefit from a 20% increase as compensation.

Former members of the disciplined forces will also be recognised more fairly, as they will begin receiving the full annual pension increases, ensuring equal treatment and greater financial stability in retirement.

Practical support will extend to everyday decisions, including housing. Elderly persons who choose to downsize their home will be treated as first-time buyers for stamp duty purposes, allowing them to save up to €15,000 when purchasing a smaller property under the Our Next Home scheme.

Together, these measures reflect a clear commitment: to ensure that pensioners and the elderly live with greater security, fairness, and peace of mind – recognising both their past contributions and their present needs.
