The Labour Party said Alex Borg’s latest comments on the appointment of a Chief Justice underline what it described as a growing pattern of inconsistency in his leadership.

After rejecting two Government nominations without offering clear justification, he is now endorsing an anti deadlock mechanism that had already been placed on the table by a Labour Government. According to Labour, the shift raises legitimate questions about whether his positions are rooted in principle or shaped by internal pressures he appears unwilling or unable to confront.

Prime Minister Robert Abela had in recent days argued that an anti deadlock mechanism is necessary, recalling that the Opposition had blocked its introduction in 2020. He also stressed that until such a reform is enacted, the country’s courts continue to function normally under the leadership of Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti.

Labour said that if Borg genuinely has the national interest at heart, discussions on this much needed reform should take place now rather than be deferred to an election cycle. It added that leadership on constitutional matters demands consistency, maturity and a clear sense of direction, qualities it suggested are difficult to reconcile with frequent repositioning and reactive politics.
