Labour Youth has warmly welcomed the news that an agreement has been successfully reached on a new collective agreement for educators at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST). This agreement marks another important step forward in improving the conditions of educators, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to supporting and empowering those at the heart of our education system.

The conclusion of negotiations between MCAST and the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) is a significant development. Labour Youth is satisfied with the outcome, which not only enhances the rights and working conditions of educators, but also complements the broader strategic investment in MCAST as a leading institution for further and higher education in Malta.

Prime Minister Robert Abela also welcomed the news, stating:
“Satisfied that we managed to successfully close the negotiations with the Teachers’ Union on a new collective agreement for MCAST educators. They were not always easy discussions, but I am proud that once again it will be this Government that will strengthen the conditions for more teachers and academics who are the brains of the development of our children and therefore of the welfare of the Maltese. I thank Minister Clifton Grima who together with many people worked wisely to give our country another strong and responsible result in favour of workers in the educational sector and the future of Malta and Gozo.”

In recent years, MCAST has seen considerable infrastructural and educational advancements. The construction and modernisation of key facilities, including the recent €14 million investment in the new Institute of Information and Communication Technology, are part of a wider €33 million project. This ambitious programme also includes the development of new premises for the Building and Construction Facilities at the Institute of Engineering and Transport, as well as the MCAST Resource Centre.

These investments are crucial for maintaining high standards of teaching and learning, and for ensuring that MCAST remains a vital hub for vocational education and training in Malta. The institution plays a pivotal role in equipping thousands of full-time and part-time students with the skills they need to pursue successful careers, while also fostering a strong culture of lifelong learning.

Labour Youth also recognises the recent academic milestone achieved by MCAST with the launch, in 2024, of Malta’s first-ever Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine. This Level 7 accredited course represents a significant expansion of the college’s academic offerings and provides a new pathway for students aiming to become veterinarians, a testament to the institution’s ongoing evolution and responsiveness to national and professional needs.

This latest collective agreement reinforces the importance of supporting educators, whose dedication and professionalism are essential in shaping future generations.
