A site in Kirkop that had been earmarked for development has instead been transformed into a new public garden, giving residents a new accessible and sustainable open space in the heart of their community.

Ġnien il-Koppin was inaugurated by Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Minister Miriam Dalli together with Kirkop Mayor Matthew Agius Zammit, following works carried out by Project Green. The garden covers 1,600 square metres in an urban part of the locality and represents an investment of more than half a million euro.

The project includes a viewing platform, pathways made from recyclable materials, aromatic herb areas, children’s play equipment and features that support biodiversity, including an insect hotel.

As part of the works, 55 mature trees were planted, together with indigenous plants and trees aimed at strengthening the local ecosystem. The garden also includes an automatic irrigation system powered by a 110-cubic-metre reservoir, built to ensure more efficient water use, while solar-powered systems reinforce the project’s sustainability credentials.

Minister Dalli said the project is a clear example of how land that could have been developed was instead turned into an open space for families and residents.

“This was land marked for construction,” she said, noting that Government had pledged to create more open spaces within a 10-minute walk of communities. She added that the choice was clear: instead of more buildings, Koppin residents now have a new open space with environmental and educational elements.
