Prime Minister Robert Abela has strongly reacted to the recent decision by the Bottle Collection and Recycling Scheme (BCRS) to increase its tariffs for local beverage producers and importers, a move set to take effect this Saturday. In his response, Abela emphasised that the private operator should focus on enhancing the service and efficiency of its recycling operations, not on imposing unnecessary costs on consumers.

The accusation that the government is implementing a new tax related to beverage bottles is entirely unfounded. As Minister Miriam Dalli stated unequivocally, “No new tax has been introduced by the Government.” She further clarified that the price increases observed in the private sector are in no way tied to any governmental decision, nor do they reflect any changes to the deposit scheme related to beverage bottles.

In fact, the government has consistently maintained its stance on consumer protection and the respect owed to the Maltese people. Minister Dalli went on to emphasise that the government remains committed to ensuring that the consumer is treated with the utmost respect and efficiency, and that it will continue to push the BCRS to better serve the public. “I made it clear,” she said, “that it is the importers and producers who must bear the consequences of their decisions.”

It is important to note that Malta, in line with the European Union, is obligated to have a system similar to this by 2029. However, unlike the opposition, the government is committed to working in the best interests of the people rather than attempting to score political points at their expense.

The Labour Party rightly reminded the public that it is the opposition that constantly takes a stand against measures designed to support families. Remember, during the Stability Scheme, the PN sided with importers rather than consumers. Similarly, when it comes to energy subsidies, the Nationalist Party has repeatedly prioritised the interests of the EU over those of the Maltese public. In stark contrast, this government has consistently chosen to support the people, always putting consumers first.

The only tax change that has occurred this month was a reduction in income tax, directly benefiting all workers in Malta. This was a real, tangible action to ease the financial burden on families. Any claims of a new tax are not only false but also deliberately misleading, a tactic that the PN appears all too willing to employ in their ongoing efforts to confuse and mislead the electorate.

The government remains steadfast in its commitment to its citizens, ensuring that any changes to taxation or policies are carefully thought out and designed to benefit the people of Malta. The Nationalist Party’s attempts to stir fear with falsehoods regarding taxes on beverage bottles should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The public deserves honesty, transparency, and above all, a government that truly serves its people.
