Once plagued by power cuts and outdated infrastructure, the Labour Government has transformed Malta’s energy sector through bold decisions and decisive investment. By embracing LNG technology and upgrading its electricity network, the Labour Government has powered Malta’s growth, securing a cleaner, more reliable, and sustainable energy future for all.

Back in 2008, Malta’s residents were accustomed to constant power cuts. Outages were caused by ageing electricity generation plants that struggled to keep up with demand. The country’s power stations were kept running largely thanks to the tireless efforts of experienced and dedicated engineers. Government finances were in dire straits, and the economy was at a standstill, with unemployment reaching alarming levels. Investing in new power plants was the last thing on the government’s mind.
Enemalta, the state company operating the plants, was on the brink of bankruptcy. Yet the government had no choice but to build a new power station. Instead of choosing modern and cleaner technologies, such as LNG, the Nationalist administration opted for the easy route, prioritising short-term public finances over people’s health and forcing citizens to shoulder higher electricity bills.
The contrast with today’s government could not be clearer. When the Labour Party took office, it faced the situation head-on and began to fix the problems it had inherited. The heavy fuel oil plant was repurposed to accept LNG, and a brand-new LNG-powered station was built. This was a bold and visionary decision. Storing LNG is a major challenge for a small island like Malta, and there are only a handful of islands in the world that operate LNG-powered plants. Such a step could only be taken by a government that truly believed in its policies – policies that re-energised Malta’s economy.
Thanks to the new LNG plants, Malta today has the energy capacity needed to power its fast-growing and increasingly electrified economy. In an era of record temperatures and rising global energy demand, Malta continues to meet its needs efficiently and reliably.
Fast forward to the present day, and Malta is once again facing challenges, this time within its electricity distribution system. These issues were unanticipated, but unlike in the past, the government responded swiftly and decisively. Instead of confusion and hesitation, it took action, investing unprecedented sums to upgrade the electricity distribution network.
Within just a year, the results have already begun to show. As this work continues, these investments will strengthen the backbone of an ever-growing economy.
The ongoing reinforcement of the electricity network, the new interconnector due next year, and the many other initiatives underway in the energy sector will ensure that Malta is ready for a fully electrified and affordable energy future. One that provides peace of mind to everyone who believes in the potential of our country.
