Linking Gozo and Malta: More Routes, More Possibilities

Connectivity between Gozo and Malta is taking another step forward, with new fast ferry routes set to expand how people move between the islands.
Thousands of Gozitans already rely on the existing service between Mġarr Harbour and Valletta, using the 45-minute crossing as part of their daily routine for work, study, and business.
Minister Clint Camilleri confirmed that Mġarr will soon be directly linked to Buġibba and Sliema. With Valletta remaining on the route, Gozo will be connected to three key destinations across Malta.
For many, the change will be felt immediately. Medical staff and other essential workers can reach their jobs without unnecessary detours. Students arrive at campus more quickly, while businesses across Malta gain easier access to Gozo’s workforce and market. Time saved each day translates into a better quality of life for families.
Alongside the new routes, further investment is underway. A fifth vessel will strengthen the Gozo Channel fleet, while a dedicated taskforce is examining the long-term development of Mġarr Harbour, including expansion options and alternative road access.
Improved connectivity is already shaping broader outcomes. Tourism in Gozo is becoming more consistent throughout the year, supported by 326 cultural activities organised by the Ministry for Gozo, which continue to attract visitors beyond the peak season.
Gozo’s role within Malta Vision 2050 is clear. As a model for sustainable development, the island depends on strong, reliable links. Each new route, vessel, and infrastructure upgrade builds on previous progress and reinforces that direction.
Shorter journeys, wider opportunities, and easier access to services are now becoming part of everyday life for Gozitan families. At the same time, Malta is drawing closer to Gozo, whether for work, business, or a simple day trip.
What was once met with scepticism has evolved into a service that connects more people, more places, and more possibilities across the islands.
