Malta’s Labour Government is reinforcing its commitment to protecting families and workers from rising living costs, with targeted support packages and a promise of even more relief in the upcoming 2025 Budget.

One of the most striking examples of innovation in recent Maltese infrastructure is the steel flyover component of the Msida Creek Project, built entirely in Malta. This marks a milestone, as the steel sections were fully manufactured in local plants, welded, transported, and assembled on site, showcasing a rare level of local steel structural capability.

The flyover is being constructed in six steel segments, each measuring between 25 and 28 metres long and approximately 7.5 metres wide, weighing up to 60 tonnes. These spans form a continuous elevated structure, replacing a congested traffic-light junction and easing traffic flow between Msida, Gżira, Sliema, and Ta’ Xbiex.

Key innovations include:

• Full local fabrication: The steel segments were manufactured locally, then welded and assembled locally.
• Precision transport logistics: Due to the size and weight of the segments, their movement required overnight operations, multiple cranes, temporary staging areas and carefully planned road diversions.
• Custom precast “predalle” concrete slabs: The bridge deck base uses custom-shaped precast slabs due to the curved alignment of the flyover. Each predalle must be shaped specifically. The process involved precise on-site measurement, followed by off-site manufacture of formwork and slabs. 

Beyond showcasing local capability, these methods reduce import dependency, speed up assembly, ensure quality under exacting specifications, and boost technical and engineering skills locally. The Msida Creek Flyover stands not just as a traffic solution but as a symbol of Maltese design, engineering and manufacturing excellence.
