The government’s Making Work Pay reforms have helped thousands transition from welfare to work by ensuring that benefits are gradually tapered as people re-enter employment. Together with in-work benefits, these measures have encouraged more parents and low-income earners to join or return to the workforce.

The introduction of free childcare has been equally transformative, particularly for working mothers. It has enabled thousands of parents to work full-time while ensuring their children receive a quality early education. Female participation in the labour force has risen sharply, helping to close one of Malta’s historical employment gaps.
