Malta has officially launched AI for Everyone, a national online course aimed at helping people understand and use Artificial Intelligence confidently, safely and responsibly.

The initiative is open free of charge to all citizens and residents in Malta and Gozo aged 14 and over, making AI education accessible to people from all backgrounds, whether students, workers, businesses or families.

Developed by the Malta Digital Innovation Authority together with the University of Malta, the course is self-paced and requires no technical background. It introduces the basic concepts of AI in a simple and practical way, with the aim of helping people use these tools to improve productivity, learning and innovation in everyday life.

Those who complete the approximately two-hour course will also receive a free one-year subscription to either ChatGPT Plus or Microsoft 365 Personal Copilot, through an international partnership with OpenAI and Microsoft. This will allow participants to immediately apply what they learn in their work, studies and daily tasks.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg said the initiative sends a clear message that Malta does not want anyone to be left behind as technology continues changing the way people live and work.

He noted that AI is transforming almost everything, and therefore people must not only have access to the technology, but also understand how to use it properly and responsibly.

Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said the course reflects Malta’s ambition to build a digitally confident society, equipped with the skills needed for the future.

He said that by pairing training with free access to advanced digital tools, Government is turning AI from something unfamiliar into a practical everyday aid for families, students and workers.

The initiative also builds on Malta’s wider digital strategy. In 2019, Malta was among the first countries to develop a strategic and ethical framework for AI, and this is now being updated to reflect new developments.

It also follows the Budget commitment of a €100 million investment in digitalisation and technologies such as AI, the Internet of Things, cybersecurity, augmented and virtual reality, blockchain and robotics.

MDIA CEO Kenneth Brincat said AI for Everyone marks the beginning of Malta’s national journey in AI literacy. The course is available in both Maltese and English through ai4all.gov.mt and can be accessed using an e-ID from a mobile phone, tablet or computer.

OpenAI and Microsoft representatives also welcomed Malta’s initiative, describing it as a step that places access, skills and opportunity at the centre of the AI era.

The message behind the programme is clear: Malta wants AI to be practical, inclusive and accessible to everyone, ensuring that people are not only ready for the digital future, but able to benefit from it.
