Malta has issued a strong reaffirmation of its commitment to the safety of seafarers and to upholding international maritime security following a spate of attacks on commercial shipping in and around active conflict zones.

The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works condemned assaults on civilian vessels as a grave threat to seafarers, international navigation and the uninterrupted flow of legitimate global trade.

The statement, issued in the wake of recent incidents including reports of an attack near a Maltese-flagged tanker in the Black Sea, clearly states that Malta views freedom of navigation and strict adherence to international law as central pillars of its maritime policy. While authorities continue to gather information about individual episodes, the ministry stressed that the safety of all seafarers “remains paramount.”

Malta’s comments underscore a recurring challenge for the global shipping industry: commercial vessels that operate in or near active conflict zones face heightened risk even when they comply with sanctions and all regulatory requirements.
