At the recent informal European Council meeting, Malta signalled a cautious but responsible stance on the Greenland matter. Malta continued to emphasise that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must guide all actions. Prime Minister Robert Abela framed the current international situation as one that tests established international norms and the maturity of transatlantic relations.

Malta urged that the future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders and the Kingdom of Denmark, rejecting any notion of coercion or unilateral measures. The Prime Minister warned that threats or use of force would carry serious implications for NATO cohesion and broader EU–US relations and therefore must be completely avoided.

While Malta supports preparedness for all contingencies, its clear preference is for diplomacy, measured communication and intensified engagement with the United States before pursuing any further steps. Abela stressed that incendiary rhetoric risks rapid escalation and undermines de escalatory efforts, so all political players must act with restraint and responsibility.

The government’s position contrasts with that of the Opposition which clearly sought to use the issue for partisan advantage and pressed more confrontational rhetoric. The Prime Minister highlighted that in today’s fast-moving media environment, both domestically and internationally, policymakers must be especially cautious about public declarations. Careless and rash statements can inflame tensions and damage diplomatic efforts.

Malta’s stance reaffirms the core principles namely adherence to international law, respect for territorial sovereignty, and prioritising dialogue over confrontation. By combining readiness with restraint and urging prudence in public communication, Malta aims to prevent further escalation, and ensure any outcome is legitimate, lawful and accountable to those directly affected.
