Malta’s steadfast commitment to peace, dialogue, and international cooperation highlighted in Parliament.

During the recent parliamentary debate on the budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism, it was emphasised how Malta’s dedication to promoting peace, dialogue, and international collaboration remains steadfast. MP Carmelo Abela underscored the continuing importance of multilateralism, particularly in a global environment where cooperation is increasingly under threat.

Despite the challenges being faced worldwide, Malta continues to work tirelessly to uphold its international responsibilities. During Malta’s two-year leadership of the United Nations Security Council, Malta performed exeptionally well, reflecting the dedication of its diplomats under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg.

Abela also highlighted Malta’s extensive diplomatic network, which currently consists of 45 embassies and representations across the world. These missions not only symbolise Malta’s global presence but also serve as vital gateways for attracting investment and generating new opportunities. He referred to the strategic importance of Malta’s Africa Strategy, launched in January 2020, which provides a platform for Maltese businesses to expand into the African continent. Several Maltese companies are already benefiting from this initiative by engaging in trade across sub-Saharan Africa.

Another significant achievement mentioned was Malta’s recognition of the State of Palestine, which took place during the United Nations General Assembly in September. A landmark decision that demonstrates Malta’s principled stance and active participation in key international matters.

Malta continues to punch above its weight on the international stage. And there is need for continued ambition, confidence, and belief in Malta’s ability to make a meaningful contribution as a credible and respected nation.

Overall, the debate highlighted Malta’s strategic approach to diplomacy, its constructive role in international peace and security, and the importance of maintaining and expanding the country’s diplomatic footprint in the years ahead.
