Four local councils in Malta are set to benefit from European Union funding to implement town-twinning projects aimed at strengthening collaboration across communities.

The projects, presented during a conference in Safi, will be carried out by the local councils of Birgu, Safi, Marsascala and Sannat, with the support of Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta.

Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, together with the Chief Executive Officer of Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta, Rodrick Zerafa, presented the projects.

Funded through the EU’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme, the initiatives will see around seventy thousand euros invested in partnerships with towns and villages across Europe.

Officials highlighted that town-twinning plays a key role in promoting cultural exchange, economic development and mutual understanding, while also encouraging citizens to engage directly in discussions on shared challenges at both local and European levels.

Among the projects, Safi will partner with a Greek locality to focus on agriculture and sustainable practices, while Birgu will collaborate with communities in Italy and Albania to promote intercultural dialogue.

Marsascala’s initiative will address domestic violence through a large-scale European network, bringing together participants from 25 member states, while Sannat’s project will focus on youth engagement and international cooperation.

Authorities say the initiatives will not only strengthen local governance, but also open new opportunities for Maltese and Gozitan communities to build lasting ties across Europe.
