The Commissioner for Standards in Public Life has categorically rejected the allegations made by the Nationalist Party’s Spokesperson for Justice, Karol Aquilina, concerning the Magisterial Inquiry into the tragic death of Jean Paul Sofia. Aquilina had levelled unfounded accusations, which have now been thoroughly dismissed in a report released today by the Standards Commissioner.

The PN had urged the Standards Commissioner to investigate the Prime Minister and the Justice Minister regarding their alleged awareness of a magistrate’s request for an extension to her inquiry into the death of Jean Paul Sofia.

As it turns out, ths Standards Commissionar confirmed that this was all a lie. The inquiry, which had been concluded, allowed for the implementation of justice in the courts. The report also confirmed that neither Prime Minister Robert Abela nor Minister Jonathan Attard had violated the code of ethics when they informed the public about delays in the inquiry.

In a staement, the Labour Party said that it has become clear that the extremist faction within the Nationalist Party, which seems to dictate the actions of its leader, has driven this malicious campaign against the Prime Minister and Minister Attard. The accusations made by Aquilina were politically motivated, and serve only to score points in an opposition strategy marked by vengeful and misleading behaviour.

In the report issued by the Standards Commissioner, which the Leader of the Opposition, Bernard Grech, has previously cited when it suits his agenda, Chief Justice Emeritus Joseph Azzopardi stated that it was entirely incorrect to suggest that Prime Minister Abela and Minister Attard had access to information they were not entitled to receive. Furthermore, a simple mathematical calculation would have revealed that the inquiry’s report could not have been completed by the originally anticipated date.

As the Labour Party observed, it is unfortunate that the Opposition, driven by partisan politics, remains blind to the truth and continues to churn out baseless accusations.
