After days of unfounded accusations, the Nationalist Party has been forced to retreat, exposing the consequences of its own misinformation campaign.

Oh my, oh my, is this not confusing? They have finally given up.

After digging themselves into a deep hole through compulsive lying about Minister Byron Camilleri, and after the Speaker was compelled to refer the Nationalist Party’s latest display of arrogance to the Privileges Committee, they have now stepped back.

The PN has been forced to retract its lie about Minister Camilleri. The truth has prevailed, yet this alone is not enough.

The Speaker should not be reduced to playing cat and mouse with the Opposition.

Lies, even when retracted, remain lies. The damage and hardship they cause are not erased by a half-hearted apology or a reluctant retreat.

The Opposition has a constitutional role to fulfil, and lying is not part of it.
