The strong public appetite for investing in Malta’s built heritage has once again been confirmed, with the Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ scheme for the Harbour Region becoming oversubscribed in less than 48 hours following its launch.

A total of 727 expressions of interest were submitted shortly after applications opened, highlighting the significant interest from homeowners, businesses and organisations in restoring and maintaining properties within Urban Conservation Areas.

This year’s Harbour Region call carried the largest allocation ever made under the scheme, with €9 million dedicated to supporting restoration works in one of Malta’s most historically significant areas. The scale of the response underscores not only the importance of the initiative, but also the growing awareness among communities of the value of preserving the country’s architectural heritage.

The scheme forms part of a broader effort to encourage responsible restoration and regeneration, ensuring that Malta’s towns and villages retain their unique character while benefiting from renewed investment.

Commenting on the strong uptake, Planning Authority Executive Chairman Johann Buttigieg noted that the overwhelming response reflects how strongly communities value their built heritage, particularly when the right support structures are in place. He added that the level of interest confirms that people are ready to invest in the long-term care of historic properties when given the opportunity.

The scheme is being implemented through a region-by-region approach, aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent distribution of funds across the country. Applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, in line with established procedures.

With the Harbour Region call now fully subscribed, attention is set to turn to additional regions, with further opportunities expected to open in the coming weeks. Members of the public are encouraged to stay informed through official channels for updates on upcoming calls.
