Speaking in Naxxar on Sunday morning in front of a big crowd, Robert Abela spoke about the Labour Party in Government’s economic record, declaring that Malta “was never happy with the status quo” and has consistently defied the odds to raise its ambitions.

Addressing supporters in the northern town, the Prime Minister said the country has built an economy that is “ten times stronger than other European countries,” framing the claim within the broader vision the Labour administration outlined earlier this week during the launch of Vision 2050.

“We always aspired to be better, and each time we were told it could not be done, we proved otherwise, and we defied expectations, also outperforming large EU countries in terms of the economy,” he highlighted.

Vision 2050: The Next Step Higher

Referring to the government’s long-term development blueprint unveiled two days ago, Abela described Vision 2050 as the next chapter in Malta’s economic story.

“The next step,” he said, “is to see Malta reaching even higher levels, not just maintaining what we have achieved but here needs to be continuity.” Other countries like France had big economies but one has to continue maintaining  the economy for it to remain strong. We are the envy of other European countries.

Sharp words for the Opposition

Abela also spoke about the Opposition, accusing it of attempting to “diffuse the government’s successes by creating tension.”

“They do not understand that the people do not want their economic model of mediocrity and austerity,” he said. “You try to extend an arm of friendship, and instead, they kick you.”

He said that the election will be called when it is in the national interest and not when the Opposition wants it to be called.

A broader political message

Malta’s past success, he argued, was built on rejecting limitations, and its future depends on continuing to do so.

With Vision 2050 now officially launched, the government is expected to expand on its targets and timelines, setting the stage for what is be the country’s long-term economic path.

Judiciary and the Chief Justice appointment

So the Opposition leader says its bad to speak or approach judiciary members, and one of his members, a practicing lawyer, speaks with members of the judiciary all the time, he said.

The Opposition leader states that an anti-deadlock mechanism is not needed and then he reverses his decision, he continued.

Tomorrow we will go to Parliament and we will present a bill on the anti-deadlock mechanism for peace of mind for members of the judiciary and for the country itself.

US-Iran escalating tensions

Turning to geopolitics, he said that the situation is burning hot, referring to the current US-Iran war.

He said the onset of what is happening shows where things are  going and we are doing our best as a Government to help Maltese nationals caught in the crossfire.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the stipends delivered to 16,600 students, the major tax cuts, and increase in pensions and conditions tied to pensions, among other budgetary measures.

He also said that he was consulting with University students from the architectural side on studies to determine whether Fort Campbell can play host to a national family park.
