Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti and Minister for Youth, Wellbeing and the Implementation of the Electoral Programme Omar Farrugia, met representatives of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) to discuss the Government’s priorities for the next five years.

Addressing the meeting, Dr Abela described the MCESD and the social partners as key pillars of social dialogue and an important force in helping Malta continue to move forward.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the Government will continue to prioritise consultation with all social partners. He highlighted the relationship of mutual respect and cooperation built over recent years, particularly during critical periods such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Government and social partners worked together to safeguard workers, families, employers and the country’s economic stability.

The Prime Minister stressed that the Government will continue to provide certainty, stability and peace of mind, particularly in the strategic energy sector.

He described the Government’s programme as ambitious and reform-driven, bringing the country closer to achieving the goals of Malta Vision 2050. Key priorities include quality of life, healthcare, education, sustainable mobility, the environment and digitalisation.

MCESD Chairperson Maria Micallef said that one of the first activities of the new legislature being an MCESD meeting sends a clear message about the importance the Government places on social dialogue and social partners.

She emphasised the need for the country to continue advancing through Malta Vision 2050, a strategy in whose launch the MCESD played an instrumental role.

Head of the Public Service Tony Sultana said the public administration is ready to listen and, above all, to lead the implementation process.

“Modern leadership means creating a clear vision, taking courageous decisions when necessary, and facilitating the change required for Malta to remain competitive, inclusive and sustainable, while ensuring no one is left behind and everyone benefits from the common good,” he said.
