Raising children is the responsibility of both parents: National campaign to bring down stereotypes proposed

At a Mothers’ Day event hosted by Dr Lydia Abela a key proposal was announced. Mothers are at the centre of a Labour Government’s policy – a top priority, to be supported and empowered. Parenting has to be shared. Its not just a mummy’s business. Men are not just their to help but to carry equal parenting duties and responsibilities.
In an extremely personal and emotional discussion various mothers gave their experiences. IVF was a key topic, the hardship associated with it but also the 1,000 birth thanks to its introduction. A particularly touching moment was when foster mother Pamela Schembri explained the beauty and love of fostering. After failed IVF attempts, the couple decided to foster and in a very touching account on the importance for parents to always have children at the heart of every decision, she insisted that children need love and stability. And government through a very long list of measures is precisely helping in guaranteeing this.
This point was also picked up by Ruth Sciberras, a grandmother, CEO, and specialist in the field with over 25 years experience. She also emphasised the importance of co-parenting, how fathers do not just have a helping role, but need to be fully active throughout from inception. Extending the point made by Ms. Schembri to separated families, she stated that through pique it is children who will suffer.
Dr Abela spoke about her personal experience, the privilege of raising a daughter, and the help that she still receives from her mum. She outlined how a labour government continues to put families as an absolute priority. And how motherhood should not be seen in any way as a limiting factor. How mums can have successful careers and how government has already done a lot about it and will continue doing so.
At this point Dr. Abela announced a new electoral measure through which a national campaign will launched to fight stereotypes. The educational campaign will address the stereotypes associated with raising children to responsibilities are shared within the family.
Dr Abela announced another two measures, one that will increase breast cancer screening starting from 45 years of age and another that will create a new holistic strategy on women’s health.
During the event one could also continue appreciate the importance being given to wellbeing and families, with a special focus on mums. It was also explained how the Labour Party proposals are to ensure that you will have more time with your baby, more financial breathing room, more support for children with additional needs, and more recognition of the load mothers carry – at every stage of life.
Dr Abela insisted that supporting mothers is a guarantee for a better society. And as they walk through this path we promise mothers that they will not do it alone.
