Some things are worth waiting for. The Nationalist Party’s confused submission for Malta Vision 2050 wasn’t one of them.

The trained eye would immediately tell you, that like Alex Borg’s budget reaction, the Malta Vision 2050 submission document has multiple authors. All good and normal so far. The problem with such stunt is that the end product will not be a coordinated submission, but a mix of conflicting ideas poorly put together.

Many of you recall Alex Borg strongly bemoaning the 2026 budget measures supporting families with children. Borg told us that families will not decide on whether to have children or not just because Government is financially supporting families. No Shoots Sherlock! But we also hope you remember that two hours later, in the last few minutes of his speech dedicated to the so called 50 proposals, he went on to propose a literally copy pasted US made EUR 5,000 grant for every birth to be enjoyed only a couple of decades later.

The same multiple hand copy paste syndrome is visible throughout the Nationalist Party’s submission for the Malta Vision 2050. And the main problem is not that the PN cannot put a document together. But that they are producing reactions just because they have to. Just like a little child filling up his essay with random words and thoughts in an attempt to placate his teacher.

But the scene is not a kindergarten. The level of amateurism is at best insulting, and at worse scary – with an opposition arrogantly demanding to Govern, and yet not even being able to put together a coherent write-up.

The first childishness teaser comes immediately with the date of the document. After failing to meet two deadlines, the PN presented its submission on 12 November 2025, however, the document is dated September. Would you believe this? In an attempt to hide the fact that for the second time the PN was late in presenting its submission, they thought they could get way with it by just back dating the submission.

Then there are major inconsistencies.

On page 4, on a document that has way more pictures than text, where they discuss the strengths of Malta Vision 2050, they praise it for ‘setting ambitious, measurable targets’, meaning it is a vision with ambitious goals. Yet in the press release accompanying the PN submission, the Nationalist Party claims that the vision for the future of our country should be more ambitious.

On page 15, the PN’s reaction mentions the need to introduce statutory Gozo Impact Assessments for all major policies and permits. Yet, they don’t even know that Chapter 600, which establishes the GRDA, already states that the most important role of the agency is ‘to ensure that a regional impact assessment, as established in Schedule II, is carried out when government ministries intend presenting to Cabinet (i) a national strategy; (ii) a national policy; (iii) a national action plan; (iv) major new projects or services; and (v) regulatory and legislative provisions, which affects or affect, as the case may be, Gozo’ And this is not some unknown law, it was even enacted at a time when MP Jerome Caruana Cilia, one of the presumed masterminds behind the PN’s reaction, was in Parliament.

The PN is in a position where it does not even know what is already implemented or not, and it is increasingly evident that it cannot put forward a coherent vision for Malta’s future that holds even an ounce of credibility. The country needs a proper opposition. One that holds the Government in check. Unfortunately, the PN keeps digging deeper,it is being stirred without a compass, and has turned itself into a heavily indebted organisation without purpose or credibility.
