Works are currently underway to regenerate Paola’s main square, forming part of a broader effort to continue investing in the locality’s infrastructure and public spaces. Alongside this project, plans have also been announced for a new lighting system for the Basilica of Christ the King—two initiatives that reflect a wider vision for the area.

At the centre of the regeneration is the transformation of Paola’s central square into a more welcoming, functional, and accessible space for both residents and visitors. The project includes the installation of a new monument dedicated to Grand Master Antoine de Paule, accompanied by a commemorative plaque marking 400 years since the founding of the locality. Bronze maps tracing Paola’s historical development will also be introduced, adding a cultural and educational dimension to the space.

Beyond these elements, the project places strong emphasis on how the square is used in everyday life. Existing fountains are being restored, while new trees in planters and additional seating are being introduced. Together with a reorganisation of the layout, these changes are intended to create a more open, navigable environment—one that encourages people not only to pass through, but to stop, gather, and spend time.

Public space projects are often viewed primarily through an aesthetic lens. Yet their real significance lies in how effectively they serve the people who use them. The design of a square—its pathways, seating, lighting, and overall layout—can determine whether it is accessible and inclusive, or whether it unintentionally creates barriers, particularly for older persons, families with young children, and individuals with mobility challenges.

In parallel, a tender is set to be issued for a new lighting system for the Basilica of Christ the King. Designed to highlight the architectural features of the façade and dome, the system will also enhance visibility within the surrounding area. It will incorporate advanced digital controls, allowing lighting levels and scenes to be adjusted as required, making it adaptable for both everyday use and special occasions. Once works commence following the tendering process, the installation is expected to take approximately seven months to complete.

These initiatives form part of a wider programme of investment across Paola in recent years. Projects such as Tony Bezzina Garden, which is already being enjoyed by the community, alongside ongoing works at Pawlu Boffa Garden and Silvio Parnis Garden, continue to reshape the locality. Road and pavement upgrades in various areas are further contributing to this gradual transformation.

Importantly, these efforts do not stand in isolation. They form part of a broader portfolio of projects being implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Public Works, through Infrastructure Malta and other entities within its remit, aimed at improving the accessibility, functionality, and overall quality of public spaces across towns and villages.

Together, the two newly announced projects represent an investment of over €1 million. However, their true value lies not only in their scale, but in their long-term impact on everyday life.

As conversations around infrastructure and urban planning continue to evolve, there is growing recognition that accessibility must be embedded at the heart of design—not treated as an afterthought, but as a fundamental principle.

Because ultimately, a square is more than just a place. It is a shared space—and how it is designed determines who is able to be part of it.
