Six years into Robert Abela’s premiership, Malta stands as a country that has weathered unprecedented global crises with confidence, emerging stronger, more resilient and economically robust under his steady and focused leadership.

Robert Abela’s premiership can be defined by six years of challenges and six years of achievements. He took the helm of the
Labour Party during a period of significant pressure, when the Labour government was facing intense scrutiny. In the early
days of his leadership, his focus was on restoring political stability and ensuring uninterrupted economic activity.

Shortly after being elected Party Leader and taking the oath of office as Malta’s Prime Minister, the Labour government was
confronted with the harsh realities of the COVID-19 pandemic. Protecting public health, safeguarding jobs and ensuring the
nation’s wellbeing became paramount.

During these testing times, Prime Minister Abela navigated uncharted waters with diligence. Despite facing criticism, he
ensured that the country continued to move forward. Jobs were preserved, and the Maltese people received high-quality
healthcare, enabling Malta to rebound swiftly once the pandemic subsided.

As the pandemic waned, Europe was hit by another major crisis marked by soaring inflation and the disruption of global
supply chains. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine brought military tensions back to the forefront of European affairs,
creating an alarming backdrop for any national leadership.

Once again, Abela’s government rose to the occasion, taking political decisions that prioritised people’s needs. Energy price
stability was guaranteed, and continued economic growth was supported, with Malta registering one of the highest economic
growth rates in the European Union.

Despite Malta’s strong economic performance prior to 2021, Prime Minister Abela successfully negotiated the largest
European financial funding package in the country’s history. Opposition critics had claimed that Malta could not secure more than what was achieved under a previous Nationalist administration. Time proved otherwise, marking a significant success for
his government.

Malta’s prosperity has continued to strengthen, with sustained job creation driving unemployment to its lowest level ever
recorded. Government finances have stabilised, and the debt-to-GDP ratio remains among the lowest in the EU. Notably, the
government has generated higher revenue while implementing substantial tax cuts for workers in the past two budgets.
At the same time, pensioners have benefited from increased pensions, and spending on social measures has risen
significantly. Economic growth is clearly translating into improved incomes and greater security for citizens.

Recent decisions have also placed greater emphasis on environmental investment, with large areas of public land being
transformed into shared community spaces. Projects such as Manoel Island, White Rocks and Fort Campbell are set to
become public areas following extensive public consultation.

On the international stage, Malta continues to advocate peace and dialogue. In various international forums, the country
promotes de-escalation and meaningful communication between states and communities. Malta’s recognition of the
Palestinian state reflects its longstanding commitment to peace and international justice.

Looking back on six years of Robert Abela’s premiership, it is evident that this period has demonstrated how progressive
politics can deliver economic growth, stability and opportunity. His leadership has produced tangible results during turbulent
times, ensuring resilience and continuity for Malta and its people.
