Scotland began their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Group C, securing three important points in their opening match in Boston.

The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when John McGinn scored Scotland’s first World Cup goal since 1998. The midfielder reacted quickest after Che Adams’ initial effort was saved, with his shot taking a slight deflection before finding the net.

Steve Clarke’s side made a positive start and came close to opening the scoring earlier when Scott McTominay struck the post. Scotland enjoyed much of the possession during the first half but were unable to add to their advantage despite creating several opportunities.

Haiti, appearing at the World Cup finals for the first time since 1974, showed determination throughout the contest and threatened on several occasions. Goalkeeper Angus Gunn was called into action after spilling a shot from Carlens Arcus, although Scotland managed to clear the danger.

Ben Doak also went close for Scotland, seeing an effort blocked after being picked out by captain Andy Robertson. McGinn later missed a chance to extend the lead, pulling his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

Haiti continued to push for an equaliser in the closing stages and came closest when Frantzdy Pierrot headed narrowly wide from a promising position five minutes from time.

The result places Scotland at the top of Group C after Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1 earlier in the day. Scotland’s next group match will be against Morocco on June 19.
